| The forward looking Swiss last week calibrated the break through of the last section of rock to complete the world’s longest railroad tunnel of 57 km (34 miles). The idea of a railway tunnel beneath the Swiss Alps was first proposed in 1947 by the Swiss engineer Carl Grune. After 12 years of construction and £6.6 billion ($10.6 billion) his dream was realized by ‘Sissi,’ a German built tunnel boring machine that completed the 9.5 meter wide tunnel on October 15, 2010. | |
